This is the first-- Don't Let the Real Monsanto bill get through Congress [please visit the link for further "take action" links April 23, 2009 Dear Supporter, Can you ask Congress not to force GE Crops on countries and Farmers who don't want them? An effort to fight global poverty and hunger may become a Trojan Horse to force genetically engineered crops on countries and farmers that do not want them. Can you ask your member of Congress to keep genetic engineering out of any food aid and agricultural research legislation? In the Senate, Senators Bob Casey (D-Penn.) and Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) introduced the Global Food Security Act which increases desperately needed funding for agricultural research in the developing world. Unfortunately, the bill also requires investment in genetically engineered crops favored by a handful of companies like Monsanto. Most developing countries, especially in Africa, do not allow genetically engineered crops to be cultivated, but that's changing with international pressure. During the 2008 food crisis, pressure from U.S. companies forced countries to allow GE crops that are unwanted by their farmers. What's worse is that genetically engineered crops are not a solution to world hunger. The Union of Concerned Scientists recently found that genetically engineered crops have not increased the yield of American corn and soybean farmers -- nor will it be able to combat hunger in the developing world. The House of Representatives is expected to introduce similar legislation soon. [please visit the link to take action] April 27, 2009 Dear Supporter, Can you ask your Senator to help eliminate antibiotics from CA livestock? In the California Senate, Dean Florez (CA-16th) has introduced SB 416 which eliminates the use of nontherapeutic antibiotics in livestock. The legislation passed out of the Senate Food and Agriculture committee and is now headed to the Senate Education Committee. Can you let your Senator know that you want antibiotics eliminated from the food supply? Many animals raised for food receive routine, low doses of antibiotics through their feed and water. Producers do this in order to boost growth rates or prevent disease outbreaks among animals housed closely together, often in unhygienic conditions. The volume of antibiotics fed to animals for these nontherapeutic purposes dwarfs the amount used to treat sick animals, and half of the antibiotics used are either the same or very similar to those given to humans when we are sick. Food and Water Watch is extremely concerned about the human health impact of nontherapeutic antibiotic use in livestock and poultry production. Major medical associations agree that this practice contributes to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can sicken humans. The Senate Education Committee will decide Wednesday April 29th whether to pass this legislation out of committee. Let your Senator know that you want them to support this effort to eliminate non-therapeutic antibiotics from your meat! [visit the link to donate] December 2008 Dear Friend of Food & Water Watch, As a mom, an organic gardener, and as a pediatric nurse in Ohio I've been interested in food issues most of my life. In the past 5 years I've become a voracious reader on the subject. As you well know, the health of our planet, our food sources, our choices, and human and animal health are all closely linked. We must grow towards a wholistic and sustainable agriculture and food awareness in order for our Earth to continue to support us all. I discovered Food & Water Watch when they came to Ohio helping spearhead the work to promote safer milk over artificial hormones. I met Sarah Alexander - a food organizer - at one of the public hearings. It's easy to get frustrated with a corporation with a track record of say, Monsanto, but watching Sarah - and activists like her - working tirelessly around the country has kept me inspired. Sometimes change is slow, but we never know what one moment will shift the tide in the direction of healthy change, so we just have to keep at it. That's why I grow a lot of my family's food organically each summer in our small urban backyard, I shop local and organic, and I talk about food issues with everyone I know. I keep up-to-date with Food & Water Watch as a leader in this arena. I write letters to the editor a lot! As a pediatric nurse, I see the consequences of inadequate and inferior food supplies. I'm hopeful to see the day when kids aren't hungry or going without, and the choices they have before them are all healthy ones. Wouldn't that be something? However, right now I am very concerned that Big Agriculture (and the likes) will continue to fool us into poisoning our soils. I'm concerned that we'll sell off our freshwater sources to the highest bidder. I am concerned that clean, fresh and free water will not be honored as the right of every human globally. I am also concerned for all of us that we won't learn from the mistakes. How we treat our planet; tend to the soil; grow our food; provide for our children's future - it's all connected. And the situation is critical. I've got a lot more I can say - I'm passionate about these issues - but I'm going to end here with an urgent plea that you make a generous year-end tax-free donation right now to Food & Water Watch because they are doing something about the issues I care about - and know you care about, too. Tell the Senate to Include Farms in the Foreclosure Relief Legislation click link to take action Dear Supporter, Banks that receive additional taxpayer money should be required to show some flexibility to rework farm loans during this economic crisis. Ask your Senator to support the Feingold-Gillibrand amendment. Big banks that are taking taxpayer money are trying to short-change farmers. The banks are too big to fail, but they view these farms as too small to save. Can you ask your Senator to support the Feingold-Gillibrand amendment to the foreclosure bill so farms can keep operating? Farmers often risk it all to be able to keep farming. They often have to bet their farmhouses in order to get the needed credit to plant crops each spring. Banks are not taking the time to work with farmers who are in trouble because of the economic crisis, which could drive more farms into foreclosure. Tomorrow, the Senate will debate legislation (the Helping Families Save their Homes Act of 2009, S.896) to help troubled homeowners restructure their mortgages to save their homes, but most family farmers who face foreclosures would not be protected by the proposal because their farmhouses are part of farm loans and not home mortgages. An amendment offered by Senators Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) (Senate Amendment S.A.1032) would extend similar loan protections to farmers. This common-sense amendment will help farmers stay in their homes and on their farms. Posts: 991 05/16/09 01:44	. Dear Supporter(s), We did it! Thanks to the support of thousands of people like you, we defeated a bad milk labeling bill in Kansas this year! The bill would have made it difficult for producers who do not use artificial hormones to label their product as rBGH-free. The Kansas State Legislature passed the bill, but after thousands of activists like you contacted Governor Kathleen Sebelius (who is now the HHS Secretary in the Obama Administration), she vetoed the bill. Knowing they didn't have the votes to override the veto, the legislature finally gave up. I want to thank you for all your hard work. This victory shows once again the power we have when we work together. Over the last few years we've made huge strides in the fight against artificial hormones in milk, convincing big retailers like Starbucks to go rBGH-free and defeating bad labeling bills like this one in states across the country. Of course, there's still more work to do. As consumers and retailers increasingly reject rBGH, it's time that we give give schools the same choice that consumers have. If it passes, and you buy/sell/share/collect/dry/eat/feed to your family any of the restricted things, you become a criminal subject to great fines. Please take action to protect your current right to use the foods, herbs, supplements, and therapies the Conservative government is trying to outlaw. Here is a link to a petition against Bill C-6. Posts: 991 07/02/09 03:41	. Let's Make Sure All Imported Catfish Meets Our Safety Standards---Take Action "Have you ever ordered catfish at a restaurant? You probably assumed you were getting a southern freshwater fish, commonly breaded and fried to a golden brown. In turns out there's a good chance you were eating a similar whitefish from Vietnam or China. These imported catfish are not currently subject to the same food safety standards as U.S. catfish. Can you ask Secretary Vilsack to hold these imported fish to the same high food safety standards? Last summer, when Congress passed the Farm Bill, it included a measure that created a new inspection program specifically for catfish at USDA. The department under Secretary Vilsack is working right now to design that new inspection program, and we hear that they are under pressure from China, Vietnam, and seafood importers to let some imported catfish escape the reach of this new program. Considering that the Food and Drug Administration has previously blocked farmed catfish from China because of widespread contamination and dangerous chemical residues, we need to make sure there are high standards for these commonly imported farmed fish. Now's our chance, but only if USDA does the right thing when it's writing the rules. While there's some confusion around what's allowed to be called catfish, the bottom line is, if it's marketed as catfish, it should be subject to inspection. Don't Let Genetically Engineered Crops Take Over---Take Action In the last months of the Bush Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture proposed some bad rules that significantly weaken the oversight of genetically engineered crops. These rules are bad for consumers, the environment, and would allow the biotechnology industry to regulate itself. Can you demand that the Obama Administration ditch the Bush rules, and make rules that will adequately regulate genetically engineered crops? The rules USDA has offered further endanger your right to choose the foods you and your family eat and farmers' right to their chosen livelihoods. If implemented the rules would virtually ensure more contamination of organic and conventional crops, and would continue to allow the dangerous practice of producing drugs and industrial chemicals in food crops grown in the open environment, and in many cases even allow the biotechnology industry to decide whether their GE crops are regulated at all. We have an extremely important opportunity to have the Obama Administration create rules that could be stronger than anything we've had for the last 15 years. We need real regulation and oversight of genetically engineered crops that are being created and planted every day with new toxins, poisons, and drugs. Can you submit a comment now requesting that Obama's USDA scrap the Bush Administration rules and create real rules for change in the biotech industry?
